The Peloponnese is connected to the Attica by the Isthmus of Corinth, and recently by a bridge near Patras.
It is a mostly a mountainous peninsula, compartmentalized out of inner basins and plains irrigated towards the littoral.
In the east, the acropolises of Argos and Mycenae dominate the Argolide region, Olympia is located at the west, the medieval city of Mystras is close to Sparta in the south, just northward of the wild and austere Mani peninsula.
