The site of Marathon remains famous thanks to the battle which opposed the Greeks to the Persians in 490 BC.
To repress the Greek revolts, Persians unloaded in Attic and decided to walk on Athens. Twice fewer in quantity, the Greeks succeeded in encircling their enemy who knew an exemplary defeat.
The chief of the the Greek armies, Miltiades, sent his messenger to Athens to announce the victory. This one ran the 40 km since Marathon, transmitted its message and then died of exhaustion.
